Steel Cutting of 2nd NGMV at Kochi

‘Steel Cutting’ ceremony of the second ship of the Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) project was held at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi on 17 Sep 2026, with RAdm Kapil Mehta, Assistant Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition as the Chief Guest. Other senior officials from the Indian Navy and CSL were also present for the occasion.
Contract for construction of NGMVs was concluded with CSL in March 2023. The NGMVs are planned to be installed with state-of-the-art weapon and sensors, which would significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy as a ‘Future Ready and Combat Ready Force’. The construction of the ships reinforces India’s commitment to build a strong and modern Navy, capable of operating in the complex maritime environment of the Indian Ocean Region.
Further, all the major role defining equipment have been indigenously developed and manufactured, underscoring the Nation’s prowess and are in consonance with GoI initiative of ‘AatmanirbharBharat’ ‘Makeinindia’ and ‘MakefortheWorld’. CSL won the competitive bid worth 10,000 cr for 6 vessels.
The construction for the first ship of the class begun on December 16, 2024 with steel cutting ceremony.
About NGMV
Six Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) class of ships
The main capabilities that NGMVs are envisaged to possess are Surface warfare capabilities, low RADAR, acoustic, magnetic and IR signature, high endurance and credible AMD/AA capability. With 5.0 m of draught, the vessels will have a range of 2800 nm at sustained economical speed and 1000 Nm at max speed of 35 knots.
The ship would carry a minimum of 08 ship to ship missiles with a Point Defence Missile System (PDMS) for providing credible near 360-degree Anti Missile Defence (AMD) coverage to the ship. It is capable of engaging sea-skimming missiles, flying 3-5 m above sea level, upto a max speed of 3 Mach.
A Gun with stealth features having range not less than 15 km and capability to carry out Surface to surface, Air to Air and Anti Missile Defence (AMD) with facility to be remoted using Fire Control Radars (FCR) as well as EO (Electro-Optical) sight.
