On 31 August 2026, in the presence of Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic,  and Ulf Kristersson, Prime Minister of Sweden, Mikael Granholm, Director-General of the FMV  (the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration), and Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, signed the contract for the procurement of four defence and intervention  frigates (FDI) for the Royal Swedish Navy, less than four months after Sweden announced its  selection of the FDI.  

Naval Group today signed a contract in Stockholm with the Swedish Ministry of Defence for the  procurement of four defence and intervention frigates (FDI) for the Royal Swedish Navy, following  exclusive negotiations conducted with the support and cooperation of the French Government.  

Naval Group has therefore been selected as a strategic partner by the Royal Swedish Navy to  rapidly strengthen and modernise its fleet’s capabilities in a challenging operational context,  thereby reaffirming its long-term partnership with Sweden and the strength of industrial  cooperation in Europe. 

With two units already delivered to the French and Hellenic navies and a tried-and-tested  production line, FDI is thus able to meet Sweden’s requirements for rapid delivery, with the first  delivery scheduled for 2030.

FDI, an operationnal and combat-ready frigate 

A state-of-the-art frigate, the FDI is combat-ready and boasts proven capabilities across all areas  of warfare, notably with powerful anti-air capabilities based on the ASTER system. The FDI is  capable of countering current and emerging threats in the demanding waters of the High North  and in challenging environments such as the Baltic Sea or the North Atlantic. The frigate will  provide the Royal Swedish Navy with extensive capabilities to support the country’s key role in  inter-allied and NATO naval operations.
