IN-SPACe Unveil Space Industry Standards
New Delhi, Sept 20
The Indian Space Policy – 2023 has given IN-SPACe the mandate to define frameworks for developing space industry standards based on global benchmarks and promote a culture of excellence in the Indian space industry.
To accomplish this, IN-SPACe has created an action plan (a framework) to disseminate Indian standards based on internationally accepted best practices. Taking the first step towards this, Sh. Rajeev Jyoti, Director, Technical Directorate, IN-SPACe announced the release of the “Catalogue of Indian Standards for Space Industry" complied by IN-SPACe and BIS at the inaugural session of International Conference on Space 2023, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He highlighted that the release of these standards would enable the Indian space industry to be globally competitive and produce reliable space products.
The “Catalogue of Indian Standards for Space Industry" comprises a brief of 15 standards published by BIS covering a spectrum of domains that encompass Space System Program Management strategies, Systems Engineering principles, Product Assurance Mechanisms, and more across all sectors of space endeavours including satellites, launch systems, ground systems, etc. for easy reference by all concerned stakeholders.
In subsequent volumes of the catalogue, IN-SPACe along with BIS, intends to publish more Indian Standards for Space Industry across all domains, such as the management of space programs, security & safety, space transportation, design & test methodology, production, maintenance, operations, etc.
Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) is an autonomous nodal agency under Department of Space, Government of India formed on 24 June 2020 to promote, enable, authorize and supervise non- government entities (NGE) to undertake space activities. These activities include manufacturing of launch vehicles and satellites, providing space-based services, establishing a ground station, sharing of space infrastructure & facilities; and establishing new facilities under DOS.
IN-SPACe is currently functioning with three directorates viz., Promotion Directorate (PD), Technical Directorate (TD) and Program Management and Authorization Directorate (PMAD) and one division i.e. Legal, Finance and Administration Division with its headquarters at Ahmedabad.
