Year End Review – 2018 Ministry of Defence (excerpt)

It was an eventful year for Ministry of Defence. Government of India took policy decision to set up two Defence Production Corridors, one each in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Tamil Nadu. These would go a long way in making India self-reliant in defence production through ‘Make in India’ initiatives. It was also a year of another milestone for women empowerment in the country when the first-ever all-women crew circumnavigated the globe in an indigenously built 56-foot Indian Navy Sailing Vessel, ‘INSV Tarini’.

Defence in Parliament - 99 contracts with Indian vendor in last three years

Government is pursuing initiatives to achieve higher levels of indigenization and self-reliance in the defence sector by harnessing the capabilities of the public and private sector industries in the countries.  These measures include according priority and preference to procurement from Indian vendors and liberalization of the licensing regime.  Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) accords the highest priority to Buy Indian (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) (IDDM).  The ‘Make’ procedure has been simplified with provisions for earmarking projects not exceeding development c

White Shipping - Information Exchange

  1. ‘White Shipping’ information refers to the information on merchant shipping. This information is available primarily through the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which are equipment fitted on merchantmen with more than 300 Gross Registered Tonnage as mandated by the International Maritime Organisation. The AIS information from ships comprises name, MMSI number, position, course, speed, last port visited, destination etc.

Sitharaman inaugurates Information Fusion Centre for IOR

Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, the Honourable Raksha Mantri, launched the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) today, 22 Dec 18, at Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) Gurugram. Apart from representation by officials from the MoD, MEA, MHA, Ministry of Shipping and the NSCS, Ambassadors and Resident Defence Attaches of partner countries also participated in the event.

 

Defence Production Corridor - Tamil Nadu making right moves

 Tamil Nadu defence production corridor or Tamil Nadu Defence Production Quad comprises Chennai; Coimbatore and Salem; Hosur and Tiruchirapalli  ‘Greater Chennai’ including the manufacturing zones of Avadi, Ambattur, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, could become a major defence cluster with potential of creating 10 lakh jobs and attracting investments of over Rs. 60,000 crores over a 15-year period  The government is on mission-mode and wants to achieve a turnover of Rs. 1,70,000 crores (USD 26 billion) in defence goods and services by 2025
